- (1908-90)American labour lawyer. Born in Chicago, he was a labour lawyer there. During World War II he was the head of the labour section of the office of strategic services. Subsequently he served as secretary of labour (1961-2) and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1962. Eventually he served as ambassador to the United Nations.
